Gas in Spain > Demand for natural gas > Electrical generation
Electricity generation
REE data shows that electricity demand decreased by 2.1% in 2011, compared with an increase of 3.2% in 2010. This regression in electricity demand has resulted in a narrowing of the free generation market, which only includes imported coal and natural gas.

The natural gas used by combined cycles reached 109.8 TWh, which was 29% of natural gas demanded in Spain in 2011. This amount is 4.4 points lower than the equivalent in 2010.

Discharge to the electricity network of cogeneration plants using natural gas over the whole of 2011 is likely to have reached a figure close to 22,000 GWh.
