LNG demand and trade
LNG trading keeps expanding more than the whole worldwide gas trade. Its shares already exceed 30% of the total trade, more than 8 points above the shares from 2005.

The major expansion of LNG continued in 2011, with a growth that could have reached 10%. The operation of Train 4 of Qatargas in February and the plant in Yemen has contributed to the rise of the global offer.

The rise in Qatar’s exports has turned the Middle East into the first exporting region of LNG in the world in 2011 (40%), ahead of the Pacific basins (36%) and the Atlantic Basin (24%).

During the first months of the year there still seemed to be an excess offer in the markets, which began to partly become less as the year progressed. The potential for LNG demand in some areas of emerging countries (China and India in particular) relatively balanced out the market, despite the drop in global demand from Europe.

In the US, some studies show that in 2014-15 the regasified amounts (imports) will be equal to the liquefied amounts.
Worldwide, the most dynamic area is the Pacific Basin, given the import terminal projects and those under construction in almost all countries, from Malaysia to Japan. The regasification situation is similar: the amounts under construction or depending on final investment decisions until the end of 2012 and expected to be operating in 2015-16 could reach 80 million Mt per year, in Australia and New Guinea alone. Three or four Canadian projects could add another 40-50 millions of Mt/year.

The new projects could put a total of 34.4 million tons on the market in 2016. If those that have not had a final investment decision made are added, 110 million Mt could be reached around 2020, in addition to the 19 million already operating. Australia could become the biggest LNG exporter at that time, ousting Qatar.

At the end of 2011, there were a total of 17 countries exporting LNG worldwide, with a total capacity for liquefaction of 280 Mt/year.
In accordance with Cedigaz’s prediction, the worldwide capacity for regasification is expected to grow by almost 20% between 2011 and the end of 2015. Currently there are around 654 Mt/year, divided amongst 25 countries.

The number of LNG carriers is predicted (according to Clarksons shipping services) to grow to 565 in 2015. Currently, there are 377 in service. In 2001 there were 100 ships transporting LNG by sea.

The spot market has generally been moving from the Atlantic Basin toward East Asia. It remains an expanding market, although it must be noted that some studies show that 83% of the LNG world trafficking is done under the form of a long term contract.

The price of fleets for the spot market have more than tripled in the last twelve months, going from 30,000 to 100,000 dollars/day and have even closed deals at 180,000 dollars/day (Argentina, December 2011). The orders for construction of new LNG carriers in 2011 are close to ten times higher than in 2010.

During the whole year, on the demand side, the expansion of LNG has been run by Japan (driven by the nuclear crisis), some emerging markets in the Southern Hemisphere (China, India, Kuwait, Dubai, Argentina, Thailand and Chile) and quite a few industrialized countries (the United Kingdom, South Korea and Taiwan).

Japan and Korea are still in first place among the list of countries that import LNG, a ranking in which the United Kingdom occupied third place in 2011 and Spain fourth.

LNG imports in Latin America have increased in 2011 more than 40%, strengthened by Argentina, who could have taken first position as an LNG importer of the region.
The economic growth of Argentina is generating a growing energy demand, among that being a demand for natural gas. Along with the facts pointed out regarding the rise in exportation from Bolivia, the agreement signed in February with Qatar to analyze the option of constructing a new LNG terminal can be highlighted, which could bring up to 20 million m3 of gas from Qatar per day.
In 2011 Argentina imported a total shipment of LNG, tripling the amount in 2010. The two LNG import terminals are located in the south of Bahia Blanca and Escobar, both in the province of Buenos Aires.

A first estimate of the 2011 data shows that the worldwide trafficking of GNL reaches 30.3% of the total international trade of natural gas.
