Supplies, transmission and distribution

Over 2010, natural gas supply reached 413.9 TWh, a 0.4% increase when compared to 2009.

Supply diversification in the system increased due to the introduction of new countries, particularly shipments from the new liquefaction plant in Peru. In total, Spain received natural gas from 14 different countries, as well as a small share of own production.

Other highlighted countries include: Algeria with 30%; Nigeria with 21.5%; the Gulf States with 16% (with a significant 25% increase of LNG from Qatar); Norway with 9%; Trinidad and Tobago with 8.8%; and Egypt with 8%.

In 2010, underground storage gas injection and extraction reached a total of 27,000 GWh, above the 51% recorded in 2009.

Over this past year, three new tanks began operating, all over the last quarter: the 7th tank at the Barcelona plant; the 5th tank at the Cartagena plant; and the 5th tank at the Huelva plant. Together, they can store 450,000 m3 of LNG.

Overall production from plants in the gas system increased by 1.5% when compared to 2009, reaching 312.3 TWh.

The combined figures for the length of transmission and distribution networks amounted to a total of 74,200 km, divided between 11,349 km of the transmission network and 62,851 km of the distribution network. Other progress in the sector: the length of the Spanish natural gas grid has increased by 34% over the last 5 years.

Currently, work is being carried out in the underground storage units at Yela and Castor, and the Gaviota field is being extended (the latter two in territorial waters), which will virtually double current capacity.

On 25 May, the 4th auction to acquire stock gas and operational gas was held for the period between 1 July 2010 and 30 June 2011. The closing price rose to €19.37/MWh.>

In February 2011, sometime after writing this report, the Medgaz Project is expected to begin operating, an objective pursued by its shareholders: CEPSA, Sonatrach, Iberdrola, Endesa and GDF Suez.

Covering a length of 210 km (from the input terminal in Almeria to the compression station at Beni Saf) and with an investment of €900 M, this gas pipeline has an initial capacity of 8 bcm/year. Its maximum depth is 2,165 metres and it has a diameter of 24 inches.
