Gas in Spain > Demand for natural gas > Industrial market
Industrial market
Over 2009 as a whole demand for natural gas in the Spanish industrial sector fell by 8.6%.  This downturn in demand in the sector has been occurring since 2008, when there was a cumulative contraction of 3%.

The industrial sector remains the main buyer of natural gas in Spain. Its share in 2009 was 44.9%, considerably lower than the 74% level seen in the year 2000 (before combined cycle plants came into existence), although it still occupies first place.

As was mentioned in the 2008 report, one positive feature of the industrial sector has been the performance of cogeneration with natural gas. In fact, sales of electricity to the electrical system using this technology grew by 24% in 2008. The figures for 2009, meanwhile, revealed a levelling off of this variable, with contributions to the electrical grid of around 18,000 GWh, to which must be added consumption at the point of production itself.   This situation is also without a doubt the consequence of the current economic climate.
