Evolution of proved reserves
At the beginning of 2009, proved oil reserves were estimated to total 170.2 billion (109) tonnes, 0.8% more than the figure estimated at the beginning of 2008. Central and South America together recorded a significant increase in reserve figures.

The reserves held by OPEC member countries increased by slightly more than the average figure, at 1.2%.

Central and South America together showed a significant increase in proved reserves. Venezuela is one of the countries whose reserves have increased the most, according to a report by Oil and Gas Journal. The reason for this is the new evaluation of heavy oil.
