Introduction
Total energy consumption reached 147.2 million Tep, 1.7% up on the previous year.
The figures made available by the Ministry of Industry, Tourism and Trade for the energy year 2007 point to total energy consumption in Spain of 147.2 million Tep, an amount that also includes part of the energy produced from biomass and other renewable energies not turned into electricity.

These figures point to an increase in energy consumption of 1.7%, a figure that is below the growth of the GDP and indicative of an improvement to energy efficiency.
The value is not as outstanding as in 2006*, a year which recorded a fall of 0.9% in total consumption, but it corresponds to the situation of an average hydrological year.

Of the total energy consumption, mention must be made of the progress in the two renewable energies (hydraulic + wind), with 9.5%, coal, with an increase of 8.1%, and natural gas, with a demand that is up 4.3% on the figure for 2006.
*In 2006, the heavy increase in hydroelectrical production led to the low calculation of the total energy consumption due to the inclusion of production with 100% performance, in other words, considering that production at the power station is the same as the energy actually consumed. This procedure (AIE method) also applies to nuclear power stations, but not to other electricity power stations.
