France will be chairing the International Gas Union (IGU) over the period 2012-15, in the person of its new President, Jerome Ferrier (of TOTAL). As a result, Paris will be the venue for the World Gas Congress in 2015.

Of particular significance was the 56% increase in demand from combined cycle plants and the positive progress of the industrial market, with sales up by 4%.

Natural gas is expected to remain a crucial energy source for the industrial sector and for electrical generation over the period, according to a recent study on worldwide energy consumption published by the Energy Information Administration (EIA), dealing with a timeframe up to 2030.

On 20 June natural gas demand in Spain set a summertime record. The same day also saw the peak in natural gas demand for electrical generation.

Spain is taking this step at a point when the unrestricted natural gas market already accounts for 89%, with only the remaining 11% of gas being sold on the regulated market.
