The Open Season has concluded with an increase in interconnection capacity between France and Spain via Irun/Biriatou

In July, the second and last stage of the Open Season procedure has drawn to a close. It has the ability to transport 2 bcm/year in the Irun/Biriatou international connection, in the Spain →France direction, which will be available from 2015. The MidCat project has not been approved given the insufficient capacity demand on the part of marketers.

During the first half of 2010, natural gas consumption reached 200,604 GWh, representing a 1.5% increase compared to the same period last year. The main driving force behind this consumption came from the industrial market, which displayed a 9% increase, indicative of its operational recovery. Sedigas calls for 20% renewable target to be set

2 July 2010.  The Spanish Gas Association, Sedigas, today called for the State Energy Pact being negotiated by the Spanish Government and the opposition Partido Popular party to reflect an "ambitious, realistic and stabilising" target in terms of the 20% share of renewable energies in the final energy consumption mix by 2020, in line with the "Green Package". It warned at the same time that the pursuit of a higher level, such as the 22.7% mentioned in past months by the Government, "would represent an unnecessary additional pressure which would jeopardise the economic recovery and once again destabilise the system".

Gas to fulfil the Green Package

Natural gas could contribute 84% of Spain's target for emissions reductions, serving as the guarantor behind the introduction of renewable energy sources in the country, while in turn increasing energy efficiency. Gas sector: ally in ending crisis

The President of Sedigas, Antoni Peris, has positioned the gas sector as a "valuable ally in helping the country emerge from the economic crisis". The main reasons: because it employs more than 52,700 people (in addition to the thousands working as fitters in the sector) and because it is a sector which helps to develop the national economy as a whole, with an economic impact of over 8.5 billion euros.
