According to provisional figures at the close of 2009, natural gas demand in Spain stood at 402 TWh (some 34.6 Bcm) a figure 10.5% lower than in 2008. Consumption recovered 7% over the course of the period compared with the start of the year.

The Basque Regional Government has, in partnership with Naturgas Energía, Repsol and Sedigas, launched a Safety Plan focusing on domestic gas installations in the Basque Country. The initiative is intended to increase the knowledge and awareness of consumers as to the importance of maintaining their domestic installations in good condition and using them responsibly.

ENAC, the National Accreditation Body, has accredited the company CONAIF-SEDIGAS Certificación, S.L. to certify gas apparatus fitters, start-up, maintenance and repair operatives, along with those also engaged in adapting devices for gas switchover.

Applications for 2013 have been received from eight different corporate groupings, with the demand initially offered being oversubscribed by 200%.

During the first nine months of 2009 natural gas demand amounted to 296 TWh, a figure 12% lower than the same period the previous year. Domestic and commercial market sales, meanwhile, rose by 5.5%, thanks to progress in the capture of new gas clients.

In its Report "Energy Policies of IEA Countries —Spain— 2009 Review", the International Energy Agency gave a very positive assessment of the recent evolution of Spanish energy policy. During the first half of 2009 natural gas demand stood at 197.5 TWh, a figure 15% down on the same period the previous year. There was, however, a recovery in monthly sales in June, with levels just 6% lower than June 2008. It should be pointed out that demand on the domestic/commercial gas market continues to rise.

The European Council has approved the Third Package of Gas Measures for a Single Market, at the second reading.

According to the recently issued Royal Decree defining its functions, the office will feature an Information Centre which will essentially deal with queries on the process of switching supplier, the applicable requirements and information, deadlines and consequences of the switch, and a list of commercial operators.
